Satsuma reports on Sanitary Sewer Overflows

MOBILE, Ala. — The Satsuma Water & Sewer Board responded to several Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) that began on May 22 and ended on May 23. The overflows were caused by a severe and persistent line of thunderstorms that moved through the area, producing significant rainfall and widespread stormwater impacts.

Officials say large portions of the city experienced above-normal standing water. Several homes along Orchard Avenue experienced flooding, and multiple roads were temporarily closed because of water flowing over the roadway.

The nearest manhole locations, estimated overflow, and receiving waters are listed below:

Location Estimated Gallons Receiving Water
5451 Timberland, south of Baker Road 71,250 Steele Creek
South of Old Hwy 43 & Bradford Ave. 152,250 Steele Creek
170 East Maple Ave. 238,500 Steele Creek
West end of TaJuacha Drive Loop 6,300 Steele Creek
South side of 5484 3rd St. 210,000 Steele Creek

A SSO happens when untreated or partially treated sewage leaves the sanitary sewer system before reaching a wastewater treatment plant, such as from a manhole, broken pipe, pump station, or building cleanout. Sewage can contain bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause diarrhea, vomiting, skin infections, and other illnesses.

Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, reminds residents to avoid contact with affected water, soil, and any obvious sewage, keep children and pets away from ditches, creeks, flooded areas, and standing water that may be contaminated, and not to swim, wade, or fish in posted areas or in water that looks or smells contaminated.

Most importantly if you have contact with possibly contaminated water or soil, wash skin and clothing thoroughly with soap and clean water as soon as possible.
