Small Steps, Big Impact: Moving more in Mobile County
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department is encouraging residents to look for simple, everyday ways to move more and sit less as part of a healthier lifestyle. Increasing physical activity does not have to be difficult or require a gym membership. Small changes built into daily routines can add up overtime and benefit heart health, mood, and overall well-being.
“Everyone should consider their own physical ability and start with realistic, safe goals,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Simple choices like walking a bit farther or taking the stairs can make a meaningful difference when they become daily habits.”
Easy ways to build more movement into the day include parking farther from the door and walking across the lot, choosing stairs instead of an elevator when able, and adding a short walk before or after meals. Encouraging friends and family to put away their cell phones during walks can also create space for real conversations and stronger connections with neighbors.
Residents can make walks more enjoyable by listening to music, an audiobook, or a favorite podcast, which can help the time pass quickly and motivate people to go a little farther. Mobile County and its municipalities have expanded walking trails and paths, offering convenient places to be active, enjoy nature, and relax away from daily stressors.
When being active outdoors, especially in the summer heat, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking water before, during, and after activity; wear light-colored, breathable clothing; and consider carrying a flashlight or wearing reflective gear if walking in the early morning or evening.
It is also important to stay aware of changing traffic patterns, use sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and avoid distractions so that both walkers and drivers can share the road safely. Over time, these small, safe steps can help create a more active, socially connected, and healthier Mobile County community.
