WIC prepares healthy snacks for Studio 10

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) wrapped up its celebration of National Public Health Week this morning with an appearance on WALA-TV’s Studio 10 cooking segment. Members of the Women, Infant, & Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition team prepared healthy snacks with items purchased at a WIC partner store.

Ginger Stabler, WIC District Nutrition Director, and Sommerlyn Mitchell-Johnson, WIC Outreach Coordinator, used recipes available on the WIC smartphone app. They chose “Peanut Butter and Jelly Dip” and “Apple Cookies” to make from scratch during the segment which can be viewed at https://www.fox10tv.com/2026/04/10/recipe-pbj-dip-apple-cookies.

“Celebrating Public Week reminds us that strong communities are built on prevention, education, and access to care. Programs like WIC are essential to that mission of nourishing mothers and children, supporting healthy beginnings, and strengthening the foundation for lifelong wellness in our community. We are honored to support this community as the first form of public health in the state, serving since 1816,” said Dr. Stephanie Woods-Crawford, Executive Director of MCHD’s Prevention & Wellness Directorate, which is the Public Health arm of the agency.

MCHD’s Office of Nutrition Services manages the WIC program. A monthly average of 10,413 participants received WIC food instruments during the Fiscal Year 2025. To be eligible for WIC, one must be a pregnant woman, breastfeeding woman, postpartum woman, or a child less than 5 years of age.

Pregnant women and children 1 to 5 years old may get yogurt, milk, eggs, cheese, juice, cereal, whole grains, beans or peanut butter, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Breastfeeding women may get all these foods plus canned tuna or salmon and extra milk, cheese, and eggs. Infants may get infant formula if not fully breastfed and infant cereal, fruits, and vegetables after 6 months of age.
