WISEWOMAN program hosts event to start the year

MOBILE, Ala. — The local WISEWOMAN (Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation) Program hosted an event this week at the Keeler Memorial Building in Downtown Mobile.

Shakari Beechem, a Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker who also has earned a master’s degree in Social Worker, coordinates the WISEWOMAN program at MCHD. She said the latest event allowed women to stop by and post their goals for the new year and to pick up a goodie bag consisting of a fitness tracker watch, journal, umbrella, stress ball, and WISEWOMAN T-shirt.

Participants were also placed in a drawing to win an air fryer, yoga mat, and weight scale. More than 35 women attended the event.

The WISEWOMAN program is an extension of the Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (ABCCEDP). The program focuses on identifying and reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors including high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, physical inactivity, and tobacco use.
