World Drowning Prevention Day: Stay safe around water all year
MOBILE, Ala. — World Drowning Prevention Day is not observed until July 25, but the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is reminding residents that drowning prevention is a year-round priority. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly in pools, backyard spas, open water, and even bathtubs. It affects all ages, but young children are especially vulnerable.
“Water activities are a big part of life here on the Gulf Coast, and we want families to enjoy them safely,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Simple steps like close supervision, swimming skills, and barriers around water can save lives.”
Key drowning prevention tips
- Always provide close, constant supervision when children are in or near water.
- Designate a “water watcher” — a responsible adult whose only job is to watch swimmers without distractions such as phones or conversations.
- Teach children to swim and encourage the use of life jackets when appropriate, especially in open water.
- Ensure pools and spas are secured with four-sided fencing, self-closing and self-latching gates, and locked covers when not in use.
- Keep bathtubs, buckets, and other containers empty when not in use, and never leave a child unattended in the tub, even for a moment.
- Learn CPR so you are prepared to respond in an emergency.
As families enjoy the summer at community pools, splash pads, beaches, and rivers, MCHD encourages everyone to stay vigilant and make water safety part of every outing. With small, consistent precautions, residents can reduce the risk of drowning while still making the most of our area’s many water recreation opportunities.
